Research Computing Technologies

The Research Computing Technologies (RCT) group supports the research and graduate studies missions of the University through advanced computation, storage and visualization facilities, technical services and training. RCT is a part of a university-wide effort to enhance support for advanced computing applications in research and works with the central IT organization and academic units to plan and develop core research computing resources and services.
In direct support of research the RCT group consults with individual faculty and staff to assess and meet their information technology
(IT) requirements by developing hardware and software solutions for specific research problems. RCT also partners with research-intensive units across KU to identify areas of need in IT infrastructure and services, and to develop shared solutions to meet these needs in a sustainable way. Competitiveness in externally sponsored research depends on the availability of appropriate computing facilities. RCT partners with researchers and their proposal teams to meet the advanced computing requirements of grant and contract proposals.
In parallel, RCT works with externally sponsored projects to acquire new capabilities for KU¹s research computing infrastructure.
RCT also offers general computing and storage services for researchers. One critical need in research, ubiquitous access to data, is met by a high performance multi-terabyte network attached file server through which files can be accessed and shared anywhere on or off campus.
Another problem-solving service is the research virtual machine facility through which virtual PCs can be provisioned to host databases, web servers, and other research-related software without the overhead of buying and maintaining a physical PC. Other emerging research tools include scalable high throughput and high performance computing services that integrate local, regional and national HTC and HPC resources.
RCT offers several other services related to research computing: 1) outreach, training and education programs to build expertise in advanced computing technologies and their application; 2) trialling new technologies for high performance computing, storage, networking and visualization, and fitting these into an overall technology roadmap for the University; 3) connecting KU researchers to the activities of national and international computing and networking organizations; and 4) IT support for KUCR/RGS and KUCR Core Labs through a help desk, support staff and consultants.
